Sandcross children are always encouraged to perform and improve their acting and public speaking skills – and both the Year 2 play and KS2 play give a platform for children to do this. Year 3 also perform a Christmas play and KS1/EY perform a nativity play.
The staff and music teachers co-ordinate these performances, with the Year 2 play and the KS2 plays taking place in the summer term.
The Year 2 play this year was Pinocchio which gives children the chance to be in the spotlight before they move into the Juniors. To prepare for the two performances, children help to design and make costumes, backdrops and props. This gives them an opportunity to take ownership of the play and helps to make it a success. In 2016 the ‘Moonthieves’ was performed. Previous performances have included ‘Pinocchio’, ‘The Emerald Crown’, ‘Rainbow Spectacular’ and ‘Off to Sea.’
KS2 Drama club is open to anyone in KS2 and is always extremely popular – it is run by Mrs Hannah Reynolds and Mrs Anne-Marie Romaine. From the spring term on, drama club begin to rehearse for the summer term play. Performances over the years have included ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, ‘Bugsy Malone’, ‘Robin Hood’, Cinderella Rockerfella’, 'Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat', ‘Olivia’, ‘What a Knight,’ and ‘Romeo and Juliet.’
The children performed ‘Going for Gold’, a play linked to the Olympics in 2016. The standard of singing, acting and performing is always amazing and for many it boosts their confidence and provides a lifelong memory.
