Football

Our school football team is made up of children in years 5 and 6. We compete against 12 other schools in the local Redhill and Reigate Primary Schools Sports Association league, playing each team once, either home or away. League placings are determined on points and goal difference does not count, so there is no incentive for stronger teams to annihilate weaker teams by huge scores!

To be chosen for the school team, children must attend football club which is held on a Tuesday after school during the Autumn and Spring terms. The best players are then chosen to represent the school in the team (7 a-side.) Children must be green for behaviour to be allowed to represent the school in any area. If football club is oversubscribed, Year 6 are given priority in the Autumn term and Year 5 in the Spring term.

There is also a football club for children in Years 3 and 4, which is also usually run on a Tuesday. There is no official school team or league for children in year 3 and 4, although we occasionally arrange friendly fixtures. Girls are of course welcome at any of the football clubs and are eligible to play in any team.

There is also an annual tournament held at Sandcross every year in April.

We are often very successful and have frequently won both the league and tournament over the last few years.

2016 - 2017 Match Reports

Wednesday 28th Sept

Sandcross began their season with a defeat to R.A.A. but it isn’t all doom and gloom. Mr Bates, Mr Crossland and Mr Skuse were pleased with the attitude of the team and the hard work they showed throughout.

Sandcross fell behind to a penalty after a competitive start and it was 2-0 at half time after a great individual performance from one particular RAA player. Despite the score line, the team felt hard done by as they had had a lot of possession without being able to find the net.

Into the second half, and Sandcross again had the majority of the play but couldn’t quite find that killer finish. However, RAA increased their lead, with the same player completing his hat trick with an unstoppable strike.

Our goalkeeper (Henry) who had previously pulled off some audacious saves, was finally beaten by this long-range effort.  Just before the end, Sandcross finally got the goal they deserved. Reggie pushed further forward and cut back for Will to fire home.

Well done to all those who took part, especially those who were competing for the first time.

Final Result: Sandcross 1-3 RAA

Team: Henry, Sam (c), Taylor, Bailey, Reggie, Matty, Will, Blake and Carter.

Thurs 6th October

The Sandcross football team travelled away to Salfords to compete in their second league match of the season.  After a frustrating first home game in front of goal, the players wanted to try and take their chances this week and come away with a result they deserved.

On a sloping, bobbly pitch, the game started pretty evenly, but it was the hosts who took the lead with a free kick from distance finding its way through the wall and into the net. It wasn’t long though until Bailey took the game by the scruff of the neck and played a decisive through ball for Will to finish off neatly. From the side-lines, it looked as though Sandcross would go on from there, but Salfords hit back with a sucker-punch just before half time with a thumping header from a corner.

Half time: Salfords 2-1 Sandcross

Into the second half and with fresh determination, Sandcross rose to the challenge: their passing was more accurate; there was better communication; and, more importantly, Will found his shooting boots! After running onto a through ball from Reggie, Will put his laces through the ball and equalised. From there on, there was only going to be one team taking the points. Will scored another quick-fire double following some great work from Bailey putting the Blues into a 4-2 lead. Late on, Salfords had another free kick in a similar position to the first half but just as it seemed the ball was destined for the top corner, Henry pulled off a fantastic save, tipping the ball over the  bar.

Full time: Salfords 2-4 Sandcross.

Team: Henry W; Sam P (c); Reggie I; Matty S; Bailey W; Blake B; Will L; Tayler S.

Weds 12th October

Week three of the football season and Sandcross were back at home, this time against St John's. The game started competitively with both teams having good possession but it was Sandcross who took the lead after a well delivered corner from Bailey was headed in from close range by Matty. The goal brought about a sense of confidence in the team, however, a piece of bad luck meant that St John's were back level at the break.

Into the second half and Sandcross again started brightly, Will racing away from half way before slotting the ball past the on-rushing 'keeper. And it wasn't long until the Sandcross front man doubled his tally for the afternoon with a precise finish into the far corner. At 3-1, most teams would have crumbled but credit to St John's who pulled a goal back to make a nervy last five minutes. With minutes left, it was Sandcross' turn to have the good luck when St John's crashed an effort against the woodwork, only for the ball to bounce to safety.

Full time: Sandcross 3-2 St John's

Team: Henry W; Reggie I; Sam P (c); Tayler S; Bailey W; Matty S; Will L. Subs: Blake B; Carter C.

Next up: Merstham at home for the Blues - let's end the half term on a high!
