Music

At Sandcross we have a long tradition of excellence in music. We are one of the few primary schools to boast an orchestra and our choirs frequently win local schools competitions. We are fortunate to have two specialist music teachers, Mrs Sarah Willcock and Mrs Jo Thompson, who plan and help deliver music lessons across the school as well as running extra-curricular music activities. Mrs Deborah Jackson (EY / KS1 music) and Mrs Clare Ogle (KS2 choir) also assist.

KS1 choir involves all children in Year 2 and is run by Mrs Thompson. They perform at the Reigate & Redhill Music Festival.

KS2 choir initially involves children from years 4, 5 and 6 and is one of our after-school clubs, usually running on a Friday. From the spring term, Year 3 children can also join. We always have one of the largest choirs of any school, with numbers frequently approaching the one hundred mark.

Sometimes we also run a chamber choir for singers of particular ability who practice during the school day. These children continue to perform in the main choir but also perform some separate pieces.

The school orchestra is open to anyone in KS2 who has a basic ability to play an instrument. Most instruments can be accommodated including percussion. Practice for orchestra takes place on a Friday afternoon during school time. Mrs Thomson runs a separate recorder group for able musicians.
