  • Our Local Governing Body

School governors (known as Local Governing Body members in our Trust) are people who want to make a positive contribution to children’s education. Governors are one of the largest volunteer forces in the country and have an important part to play in raising school standards.  The role of the governing body is crucial to the effectiveness of a school. (National Governors Association)

The Governors at Sandcross Primary School are a highly effective, committed group of people who offer support and challenge as part of the effective leadership of the school.  Their role is to oversee the way that the school is run, ensuring that the children get the best education possible and that it fulfils all statutory responsibilities.

    Nigel Turner

    Chair

    Co-opted LGBM

Having served as Chair of the Sandcross Local Governing Board (LGB) for five years, I briefly escaped to support another school within the Everychild Partnership—only to be lured back once more to Sandcross in an interim capacity as we search for someone to take on the role permanently.

A former secondary teacher with four decades in the classroom (yes, chalk was still a thing when I started), I bring a broad educational experience that helps me keep a watchful eye on Board operations, support the fantastic staff, and champion the best outcomes for our pupils.

At home, I’m a proud parent of three grown-up children and a doting grandad to four lively grandchildren—so my idea of a rest is coming to governance meetings. I'm also a Warden at St Luke’s Church in South Park and a long-suffering Leicester City fan... which builds character, if nothing else.

With 10 years of teaching experience in the independent sector, I have held various leadership positions in nationally top performing schools.  As a resident of the Reigate community, I am deeply invested in the quality of local education, whilst I am also interested in innovative classroom practices and the use of technology in education.  I am committed to ensuring that every child at Sandcross School has access to the best educational experiences in a supportive and happy setting.

    Alison Colville-Foley

    Parent Governor

Hello, my name is Alison, and I am honoured to have recently been appointed as a Parent Governor at Sandcross School.

I wanted to take on this role as a way of giving back to the school my children attend and to support its continued success. Before becoming a parent, I worked in the finance industry for over 15 years in roles such as Change Coordinator, Project Coordinator, and Continuous Improvement Specialist. These experiences gave me strong skills in planning, attention to detail, process improvement, and stakeholder communication – all of which I believe will help me contribute effectively to the governing body.

Alongside my professional background, I have volunteered for more than 18 years as a committee member for a registered charity that provides camping holidays for disabled people. This role has given me valuable experience in shaping facilities, reviewing safeguarding and health and safety policies, and working collaboratively to create positive outcomes for others.

I also enjoy volunteering at school, whether it’s through Friends of Sandcross events or accompanying class trips. I’m excited to use my experience and time to support Sandcross School and help ensure the very best for our children.

    Debra Beer

My name is Debra and I have worked in the NHS for over 30 years as an administrator.  I love the NHS, how we care for our patients and each over, it is a very special place.  I have been a governor for over 25 years in various roles including chair of four different schools at one time or another.  I because an advanced skills governor and have supported failing schools, I have chaired merging schools and supported two schools with challenging governing bodies.  Any spare time I like to spend with my three children and four grandchildren.  I am a volunteer steward at the local theatre, I love going to see live theatre and concerts, spending time with friends, in my garden and reading.

    Christopher Baxter

    Parent Governor

I am honoured to have been elected as a Parent Governor at Sandcross. As a dedicated parent, I am passionate about ensuring that every child receives the best possible education in a safe, inclusive, and nurturing environment.

Sandcross’s values—respect, responsibility, resilience, and kindness—are values I truly believe in, and I’m excited to play my part in supporting the school’s continued success.

I bring experience from my career in Human Resources, People Analytics, and Policy Development, and I currently work as an HR Business Partner for GXO Logistics. My role focuses on aligning HR initiatives with overall business strategy, managing workforce insights, and improving efficiency through process optimisation. These are skills I hope to put to good use in my role as Parent Governor.

Previously, at Fortnum & Mason, I worked on automating reports and dashboards, implementing HR systems, and streamlining processes. My experience in policy development, safeguarding awareness, and training delivery has given me a solid foundation to help maintain a strong and forward-thinking school environment.

I’m particularly passionate about using technology to enhance education and operational efficiency, and I value Sandcross’s innovative approach to digital learning. I look forward to working with the school leadership team, representing parent perspectives, and contributing to the ongoing improvement of our school community.

I have been at Sandcross for four years, teaching in both year three and year four. I am interested in the behind the scenes of the school, how decisions are made and how these are influenced. I currently have the role of leading Pupil Parliament where I can work closely alongside the governors to make Sandcross an even better place. I look forward to learning new skills and being part of the wider school body.
