Our Local Community

At Sandcross Primary School, our community is very important to us and we are continually working to maintain and build our links with our local community.

We currently have strong links with our local churches. We use the Reigate Baptist Church for our performances. We also visit St Luke’s Church at significant times of the year to join them for activities. Members of the church also come into school to run assemblies for our children, including the ‘Open the Book’ team, who deliver broadly Christian, interactive assemblies, which are much enjoyed by our children.

We often engage members of the local community to visit the school to enhance learning, or to lead assemblies. Recent visitors have included vets, doctors, dentists and even the fire brigade, who all come in to school to talk to the children about their role in the community.

Our Year 6 children host a ‘Community Tea Party’ each year. The children invite senior citizens from our community to come in to school to enjoy tea, goodies baked by the children and entertainment provided by the school’s musicians and choir. It is an event much enjoyed by all. This kind of opportunity to bridge the generations offers a wealth of experience and opportunity to our pupils.

As a school, we engage in charity fundraising throughout the year, raising money for such good causes as Comic Relief and the NSPCC as well as providing food parcels for needy families in the community.

Our choir are well known for their superb performances and often perform in the local community at a variety of events. If you would like our choir to attend your event, please contact the school.

We endeavour to utilise the local area when planning our visits. A number of our classes have visited local businesses and a project on ‘Reigate’ provides opportunities for our children to get to know the community.

As a school, we liaise and link with other local schools in a number of ways. Our ‘gifted and talented’ children meet with those from other schools who share their passions and engage in quality activities to stretch and challenge them in their field. Our sports teams are becoming increasingly successful in cross-school competitions, including football and cross country. Recent joint days and projects with other schools have included multi-skills days for Year 2 at a local secondary school, a D.T. day with other primary schools and a day where we hosted another school to engage in a range fun activities around the theme of ‘interaction and collaboration’.

We have also successfully taken part in a number of local competitions involving the community, including sports events, story-writing competitions, singing events and the Rotary Club’s public speaking competition.

Members of the local community are welcomed as volunteers in the school, subject to the necessary safeguarding checks and induction procedures, and take on a variety of roles from hearing readers to running clubs. Many of these are retired teachers and they provide a much valued contribution to the school. If you believe you can offer us a valuable community link, please do get in touch with the school.
